Pass plus in edinburgh

You have passed your driving test and can now drive by yourself.

This is an exciting time - driving gives you freedom and independence.

However, it is also very expensive - insurance premiums for new drivers can often far exceed the cost of a car.

Why Pass Plus?

Statistics show new drivers of any age are more likely to have an accident within the first two years of passing their test than at any other time in their driving career.  It is basically down to a lack of experience. Insurance premiums reflect the increased risk.

Pass Plus is a training scheme for new drivers. Its aim is to improve your driving skills and make you a safer driver, it can also lead to insurance discounts. As an indicator of its effectiveness, a recent survey of L test candidates carried out by ORC International for DSA, showed that of those who had taken Pass Plus -

  • 93% felt more confident on the road
  • 89% considered that their driving skills had improved as a result of taking the course

The scheme has been designed by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA), with the help of the motor insurance and driving instruction industries, to develop your skills and knowledge in areas where you may have limited experience.

Pass Plus will benefit you by -

  • Enabling you to gain quality driving experience safely;
  • Helping you become a more skilful driver;
  • Teaching you how to develop a Positive Driving style which is both enjoyable and safe;
  • Reducing your risk of being involved in a road crash;
  • Saving you money on your car insurance premiums.

Your initial driver training should provide you with a varied range of road types and conditions however, this training often takes place within a familiar area as there are time constraints and lesson objectives to consider. Pass Plus provides the opportunity to drive out of your local area, extending your driving experience safely.

Although the discount is only offered on the first year's insurance, if you stay claim free, you will begin to build your no claims bonus, leading to lower premiums year on year.

Designed by the Driving Standards Agency, Pass Plus aims to develop a positive approach to driving through two key factors - your attitude and your skills.

The course is organised into 6 modules

  1. Introduction and town driving
  2. All weather driving
  3. Out of town driving and rural roads
  4. Night driving
  5. Dual Carriageways
  6. Motorways

You have to complete all modules and undertake at least 6 hours of training. The amount of time spent on each module will vary according to individual needs. You will not have to take another test.
